What is conscious sedation treatment?
Conscious sedation treatment is a method used to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during dental procedures. It involves the administration of medication that is extremely safe, creating a comfortable environment for the patient. This allows the dentist to perform a range of treatments, from simple cleanings and fillings to extractions and even implants, while the patient remains calm and at ease.
What are the safety measures taken during conscious sedation?
Safety is a top priority in conscious sedation treatment. Patients always wear safety goggles and are connected to nitrous oxide with oxygen. Additionally, they will have a blood pressure cuff and a pulse oximeter on to monitor vital signs. All data is continuously monitored and recorded throughout the appointment to ensure the patient's safety and comfort.
What is the environment like at Lyons Family Dentistry?
At Lyons Family Dentistry, the environment is designed to be as comfortable and relaxing as possible. The larger suite has a spa-like atmosphere, and patients lay on a comfortable Tempur-Pedic mattress with a neck pillow and a fleece blanket. This setup helps create the ideal atmosphere for comfortable dental work.
How does conscious sedation feel?
Conscious sedation feels like a dream. Patients often describe the experience as being in a dream-like state, where they are relaxed and comfortable while still being aware of their surroundings. This allows for a stress-free dental experience.

How to prepare for a conscious sedation appointment?
Before your appointment, the night before your appointment, do not eat or drink anything after 9:00 p.m. Fasting is essential for your safety during sedation.
On the day of your visit, what should you wear?
Wear comfortable clothing like a gym outfit or loose-fitting clothes. You must have a designated driver to bring you to the office and pick you up after your procedure, as you won't be able to drive.
What will happen during your appointment?
During your appointment, you'll be in a relaxing spa-like setting with blankets, pillows, and calming music. We will monitor your vitals the entire time to ensure your safety. The medication will help you feel calm and comfortable, and you'll have little memory of the procedure.
What should you expect after your appointment?
After your treatment, your driver will be notified when you're ready to go home. The sedation will start wearing off, but you may feel drowsy for the next few hours. That means no driving, no alcohol, no narcotic medications—just rest and relax. By the next morning, you should feel back to normal, and you can return to work.
Why choose conscious sedation?
This is the best way to manage dental anxiety, complete multiple procedures in one visit, and have a stress-free experience. The only downside is that you'll need to take a day to rest and recover, so consider it a "you" day.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” is an effective and safe sedation agent that is inhaled through a mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. Mixed with oxygen, nitrous oxide allows you to breathe normally through your nose, and within minutes you should start to feel the effects. You may feel light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some patients comment that their legs and arms feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel comfortable and calm. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after the small mask is removed. Talk to the doctor about whether nitrous oxide would be a good option for you.
Conscious Sedation
Conscious sedation is an alternative minimal sedation that allows you to remain awake but relaxed. For people who have a fear of dental procedures, conscious sedation may take away some of the anxiety. The doctor will combine the use of oral sedation along with a local anesthetic so you have little to no discomfort. You should plan to have someone bring you to the appointment and be available to drive you home following treatment.
